Auch dieses Jahr möchte ich kurz auf die Chemnitzer Linuxtage hinweisen, die wieder ein volles Programm im Bereich Linux und (Free Libre) Open Source Software haben. Einige der Themen:

Neben weiteren Vorträgen gibt es noch Workshops zu Inkspace, LibreOffice, Python & Django, LaTeX, Rasperry Pi und mehr. Wer nicht direkt vor Ort sein kann, hat die Möglichkeit per Audio- oder Videostream teilzunehmen.

Artikel über RDFa im Screenguide #17: Semantischer Zucker für Webworker

Im aktuellen Screenguide-Magazin #17 für Webprofessionals & Designer ist ein Einführungsartikel zu RDFa 1.1/Lite vom mir erschienen. Das Heft ist ab 18.3. in allen Bahnhofs- und Flughafenbuchhandlungen erhältlich, Abonnenten haben es evtl. sogar schon heute im Briefkasten.

Thematisch und konzeptionell kratzt der Artikel natürlich nur an der Oberfläche, wie sich das für Einführungsartikel gehört :) — die Anwendung von RDFa innerhalb von Webseiten und der Vorteil von semantischen Annotationen wird über ein einfaches Beispiel vermittelt. Ich hoffe, dass ist mir gelungen.

Zum Artikel gehören auch 3 recht ausführliche Codebeispiele, die ich als Gist bei Github hinterlegt habe. Diese Beispiele werde ich in den nächsten Tagen nochmal etwas ausführlicher kommentieren und um ein paar mehr Anwendungsfälle erweitern.

Ein kleiner Teil des Artikels kann in der Leseprobe von Ausgabe 17 des Screenguide-Magazins angelesen werden.

#Leistungsschutzrecht auf Irisch

Iren und Deutsche scheinen sich ihr Drinkverhalten zu teilen, auch die Verleger und Zeitungsindustrie konsumieren wohl denselben Stoff. Derzeit möchte die NNI gerne Lizenzgebühren auf Links zu Seiten und Artikeln ihrer Klienten erheben.

Laut McGarr Solicitors soll ein Link je nach Abnahmevolumen zwischen 27 und 50 Euro kosten. Und hier sind keine Links gemeint, die andere Ressourcen einbetten, z.B. über src="http://example.com/bild.jpg", sondern einfache Textlinks zu anderen Dokumenten im Internet, unabhängig vom Text des Links (also auch “Hintergünde bei XYZ” oder “mehr dort”).

Natürlich gibt es auch ein Statement der NNI zum Thema, in natürlich klar gestellt wird, dass Links in der Sichtweise der NNI eine Urheberrechtsverletzung (bzw. Copyright Infringement) darstellen, aber dass es hier nur um Lizenzen für kommerzielle Anbieter geht, privat dürfen Links ohne Gebühren gesetzt werden.

Leider ist das nur schwer zu trennen. Ist mein Techblog nun privat, weil ich kein Geld damit verdiene, oder ist es ein Teil meiner freien Entwicklertätigkeit (z.B. als Werbung für mich) und damit ein kommerzielles Angebot und lizenzpflichtig.

Zudem stehen die Einschätzungen kommerziell/privat (E1) und Urheberrechtsverletzung/keine Urh.-verletzung (E2) nicht in Verbindung wie auch die NNI zugibt:

Das bedeutet, wenn kommerzielle Anbieter in Zukunft aufgrund einer gesetzlichen bzw. richterlichen Einschätzung bezüglich “urheberrechtsverletzende” Links Gebühren zahlen müssen, dann gilt das eigentlich vor dem Gesetz auch für private Anwendungen, d.h. es sind auch Gebühren bei privater Verlinkung möglich. Und wenn die NNI bei ihrem Versprechen bleibt, nicht für private Links zu kassieren, kann das trotzdem jemand anderes tun. Die Büchse der Verlinkungsgebührenpandorra wäre geöffnet.

Wenn das wirklich Realität wird, dann können wir das Internet wirklich für tot erklären, denn Links sind die Killerapplikation des Web 1.0 bis 3.0, die alles erst möglich gemacht hat. Ohne Links als Teil einer freien Kommunikationskultur gibt es kein Internet!

Man wünschte sich wirklich, dass über Nacht alle Links zu Seiten irgendwelcher Verlagsangebote verschwinden würden. Keine Links zu Onlineangeboten von Zeitungen in Sozialen Netzwerken, privaten Seiten, Aggregatoren oder eben bei Suchmaschinen. Dann könnten alle Unterstützer der irischen NNI oder eben des deutschen Leistungsschutzrechtes in ihrem so geschaffenen Intranet untergehen. Würde im Besten Falle kein Außenstehender bemerken, denn ein Link zum Untergang wäre ohne Lizenzgebühr illegal :)

Was Tim Berners-Lee wohl zu diesem Thema sagen würde? Achso, das hat er ja schon, 1997, also vor ca. 16 Jahren:

I already had Curtis’ book from 2009 on my list “20 Free Books on Linux, Open Source Software & Philosophy.”

I wondering if that movie is going to be a objective documentary about the subjects Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) and proprietary systems. I guess it won’t be like that. But at least it could be a movie nice to watch, and it can be used in campaigns for free software projects and as an opposite to proprietary software campaigns that people usually watch every day at TV/commercial breaks.

So let us support the crowdfunding campaign of Software Wars.

SEO improvements with Google Data Highlighter?

Semantic enhancements and structured data on websites helps to improve your SEO. Usually you use Microformats, Microdata and RDFa/Lite for it but you (or your developers) have to learn the syntax markup and vocabularies first. Now, Google added the Data Highlighter to the webmaster tools: a point-and-click tool that helps you to “show Google patterns of structured data on your website without modifying your pages.”

Google loves structured data because they use it to get more information about your content, better understanding of you content could improve your ranking in search engines. Google pushed a lot of initiatives to invite website owners to create more structured data:

telling people about rich snippets and how they can used in websites, supporting it by testing tools
telling people about the schema.org vocabulary and how to use it with Microdata
then Google added the Structured Data Dashboard to the webmaster tools, showing how Google indexed your content

All these initiatives depends on webmasters and developers who are able to add special markup to their pages. The Data Highlighter now “improves” that process because you can use a point-and-click tool to describe your actual content, no markup additions are necessary.

This makes things easier but could harm the web ecosystem because if you use the Data Highlighter to describe your content then only Google knows this description. This may help you to rank your site better in Google but it puts you in a situation with strong dependencies on Google. No other search engine provider like Bing, Yahoo or Yandex can use that structured information, no other indepentent tool can see those semantic enhancements. Second, if you change your site structure and markup you need to perform the Data Highlighter tool again on your website, even if it still contains the same data.

Test and use the Data Highlighter (be aware: it currently only works with events! Do not define your shop items as events :) ), use it to learn what Structured Data is and how it can help to improve your business, but please don’t rely only on this tool. Learn how to add structured data and semantic enhancements directly to your website (or just pay someone who knows how to do it), long term this will perform better.

Looks like we got some more advent calendars for web designers and developers last year, ~~the PHPadvent (now webadvent) seems not to be ready this year~~.

PubwichFork 2.1 released

7 months after version 2.0, the new PubwichFork 2.1 comes with improved support for responsive mobile layouts and updated social media service classes.

After saving original Pubwich from death, PubwichFork 2.0 was downloaded appr. 350 times, installs from the repository not included, it attracted attention in some weblogs for web developers, PubwichFork powered sites were shown on barcamps and featured in a professional journal.

Now PubwichFork 2.1 comes with some minor but nice improvements.

That’s easy! Just download the PubwichFork 2.1 archive (we provide Zip and Tar), unpack it in your webspace and follow the config instructions from the manual.

Zend Framework 2

A little bit more than a month ago Zend Framework 2 stable finally has be seen the light, after all the years of development it was finished earlier than the new Berlin Airport, a never ending story and source for jokes :)

Zend put a new website online and used new URIs for downloads but it seems that they forgot to set redirects, so some install routine of Zend Framework enabled software had to get updated.

"Intermediate" Twitter URIs for Feeds

I was a bit hasty when I said that all Twitter RSS feeds are dead because currently you can use the Twitter feeds via Twitter API v1. It seems that Twitter stopped to support special feed URIs some days ago, that following URIs won’t work anymore:

Twitter still supports the RSS output for their API version 1:

As version 1 of the Twitter API is deprecated now and Twitter only supports JSON with version 1.1 you should prepare your applications, Twitter are going to stop support for RSS and version 1 in March 2013.

PubwichFork im Screenguide #15 und warum FLOSS nicht totzukriegen ist

In der aktuellen Ausgabe 15 des Screenguide Magazins wird auch ein Screenshot eines Social Media Newsroom gezeigt, welcher mit PubwichFork realisiert wurde. Leider das freie Softwareprojekt für tot erklärt, was natürlich Quatsch ist. Im Gegensatz zu proprietärer Software kann Software mit freien Lizenzen auch überleben, wenn der Entwickler nicht mehr aktiv ist.

Michael Zinkl von EQS beschreibt im Artikel “Website als Newsroom” Möglichkeiten, um (Firmen-) Aktivitäten innerhalb von Sozialen Netzwerken auch wieder auf der eigenen Webseite zu präsentieren und dadurch auch mehr Möglichkeiten bei der Präsentation dieser Inhalte zu haben. Der im Artikel beschriebene Ansatz beinhaltet das Sammeln der einzelnen Aktivitäten über die von den verschiedenen Social Media Services zur Verfügung gestellten Schnittstellen wie REST-APIs und RSS-Feeds. Auch der Newsroom von Troisdorf, welcher mit PubwichFork realisiert ist, wird als Beispiel im Artikel mit einem Screenshot vorgestellt.

Als softwareseitige Unterstützung zum Aufbau eines eigenen Newsrooms wird unter anderem der Social Media Newsroom der EQS Group vorgestellt. Auch Pubwich wird kurz erwähnt, leider nur mit folgender Aussage, die falsch ist:

Pubwich ist eine Open-Source-Alternative, die kostenlos zur Verfügung steht, jedoch seit 2010 nicht mehr weiterentwickelt wird.

Es ist zwar richtig, dass sich der ursprüngliche Autor und Gründer des Pubwich-Projekts seit 2010 aus der aktiven Entwicklung zurückgezogen hat, deswegen ist Pubwich aber noch lange nicht tot. Seit Mai 2011 gibt es einen Fork von Pubwich, welcher weiterhin aktiv entwickelt wird. PubwichFork steht kurz vor der Veröffentlichung von Version 2.1. Dies hätte man auch leicht über Google oder im Github-Profil von Pubwich herausfinden.

Ich möchte hier niemanden unterstellen, dass die FLOSS-Alternative im Bereich Social-Newsroom-Software für tot erklärt wird, um das eigene proprietäre Produkt besser promoten zu können. Ich gehe eher davon aus, dass leider einfach immer noch nicht die Vorteile von quelloffener Software unter freien Lizenzen verstanden wurden.

Im Gegensatz zu proprietärer Software kann freie Software auch weiterentwickelt werden, wenn der Hersteller oder Hauptautor den Support für die Software eintellt. Proprietäre Software hingegen wäre an dieser Stelle wirklich tot, FreeHand ist dafür ein sehr populäres Beispiel. Nutzer dieser Software haben ein Problem, wenn sie auf die Software angewiesen sind. Im Bereich freier Software ist es dagegen möglich, dass die Software von anderen Parteien übernommen und weiterentwickelt ist, unabhängig wie gut oder schlecht das Projekt geschrieben und dokumentiert ist. Die Möglichkeit ist vorhanden — und wurde im Falle von Pubwich auch genutzt.

Fernost: Wo Zukunft mit Tabellenlayouts bebildert wird

Über einen Tweet der Uni Leipzig wurde ich auf die Kampagnenseite Studieren in Fernost aufmerksam — und entgegen der Erwartungen aufgrund des Namens werden hier Studienmöglichkeiten in den Bundesländern auf dem Gebiet der Ex-DDR (“neue” zu verwenden, kommt mir nach 22 Jahren irgendwie blöd vor, dann lieber “Zone”) beworben.

Fasziniert war ich gleich vom Symbolbild, welches für den Artikel über das Studium der Informatik verwendet wird:

Man nutzt dort ein Bild von Photocase, welches HTML-Markup für eine Tabelle, abfotografiert vom Monitor, darstellt.

Wenn ich mir das Markup so ansehe — leider ist nur ein kleiner Teil davon einsehbar — dann sieht das ganz stark nach Tabellenlayout aus, mit dessen Hilfe Websites vor Jahren optisch aufgebaut wurden. Zumindest folgere ich das aus den verschachtelten Tabellen und den genutzten Attributen. Genutzt wird das schon seit Jahren nicht mehr, zumindest nicht in professionellen Arbeiten. Tabellen sind nur noch für Tabelleninhalte da. Layout wird ohne Tabellen erzeugt.

Das man nun ein Bild einer sehr sehr alten Technik als Symbolbild für eine Studienrichtung wählt, die eigentlich zukünftige Entwicklungen vorantreiben soll, ist fragwürdig bis unprofessionell. Das der Absatz nach dem Bild mit “Informatik studieren heißt auf ein Zukunftsfeld zu setzen” beginnt, entbehrt nicht einem gewissen (ungewollten) Humor.

Merke: nicht jedes Foto, das mit den Stichworten “information technology internet technology software password computer network” versehen ist, sollte auch für diese Themen eingesetzt werden. Manchmal wäre eine vorherige Beurteilung durch eine Redaktion mit etwas Sachverstand ganz hilfreich.

The WWW is becoming a World Wide Wasteland, Swizec rants that in his article on the Zemanta weblog. I would like to use the metapher of a big ocean with a lot of islands without any ship routes and communication between them, or only over a few central ports.

I really agree that we need links. Even if search engines could crawl the ocean without dependencies on interlinked islands, the results for our search requests would let us in our own small world forever. Links can help us to get a new sight on things, to get new input for new ideas, and so on. Search engines may not “see” the relation between two sources if they are not interlinked.

I link a lot of stuff here in my blog, why not, I’m not afraid that I will lose readers, I probably wouldn’t have any of them without a link to my blog/article somewhere. I also like the idea to tell other content owners that I linked them, that’s the reason why I pingback them, even from Tumblr to non-tumblring sources.

He finished his article with that video about “Link Love”, I really like the style, it’s funny and a good starter to recultultivate the power of web links.

Tears of Steel: He just wanted to be awesome in space!

Yesterday Blender Foundation released director Ian Hubert’s new short film “Tears of Steel”, a movie about a group of warriors and scientists, who gather at the “Oude Kerk” in Amsterdam to stage a crucial event from the past, in a desperate attempt to rescue the world from destructive robots.

The 4th movie of the Blender foundation, after Elephants Dream (2006), Big Buck Bunny (2008), and Sintel (2010), is not fully trick animated, it’s a mix between real places and actors and CGI animation. It doesn’t matter if you like or not like the story and actors, the movies really shows what is possible with free software and volunteers. The movie was financed by Blender’s user community, the Netherlands Film Fund, the Cinegrid consortium, and by corporate sponsors such as Google.

Currently you can watch Tears of Steel online via YouTube, download and torrent links will be provided soon, when mirrors have been synced. A DVD release is planned with a lot of additional features, e.g. all sources.

Tears of Steel is released under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.

Fun fact: the movie project name was/is Mango, the soldier in the movie drinks mango juice.

Facelift: small Update of the OntoWiki GUI

Everything needs some refreshment from time to time, that doesn’t mean that it has to change completely. Before the SABRE conference 2012 I’ve tweaked the OntoWiki GUI a little bit, to provide an eyecandy and up-to-date look for presentations.

To get the story started: I created the CSS framework of the OntoWiki GUI in 2008, still with the constraint that it has to work even in IE6. You know that your hands are in chains with that, no chance for the cool stuff. Later this policy changed, but therefore it ended like this, the Silver Blue theme:

Now, 4 years later, browser support for CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 is much better, so let’s play a little bit. I did not changed any markup code, I only used some CSS for the update. I moved the main application window to top bar, then I’ve added box shadows, gradients and round corners. Silver Blue facelift 2012:

From that point it needed some changes on color definitions (what was not too trivial because we do not have pre-proceeding tools like SCSS here in OntoWiki) and we got another theme extension, called Dark Orange:

These updates are not in the develop branch of OntoWiki right now but they will probably merged into it later after some more testings. Currently you need to check out the GUI-Facelift feature branch to use the GUI updates.

PubwichFork: "Newsroom statt Webseite" beim BrainCamp Cologne 2012

Ansgar Hein von anatom5 und dem Screenguide-Magazin stellt PubwichFork im Rahmen der Session “Newsroom statt Webseite” beim BrainCamp Cologne 2012 vor.

Er geht dabei auf Vorzüge und Einfachheit der Applikation ein, um auf einfache und schnelle Weise verschiedene Social-Media-Kanäle auf einer Seite zu bündeln. Als Beispiel zeigt er den Newsroom von Troisdorf, welcher mit PubwichFork realisiert wurde.

Mehr Eindrücke vom BrainCamp 2012 in Köln gibt es bei Denkwerk und Netzmilieu, als Nachschlag gibt es die Dokumentation aller Sessions bei BrainCamp Cologne.

Ich war nicht in Köln, freue mich aber, dass “mein” PubwichFork vorgestellt wurde. Wer Interesse an mehr Infos direkt vom Entwickler hat, meldet sich einfach :)

Update: bei PubwichFork ist einiges in der Pipeline, offizieller Twitter-JSON-Support, Mobile-Support im Standardtemplate, etc … und ein offizielles PubwichFork-Demo ist inzwischen auch online.

Vor genau einem Monat hatte ich schonmal an dieser Stelle über das seit Jahren geplante Leistungsschutzrecht geschrieben und als Blödsinn befunden. Verleger wollen ihre Geschäftsmodelle nicht ans 21. Jahrhundert anpassen, sondern lieber staatlich unterstützt den heutigen Informationsfluss mit Wegezöllen versehen.

Gestern wurde wurde vom Bundeskabinett in Berlin die Leistungsschutzrechtsnovelle beschlossen. Privatpersonen, Blogger und Verbände sollen wohl zuerst nicht davon betroffen sein, aber die Entwicklung dorthin wäre momentan wohl kaum abschätzbar. Wenn Geld verdient werden kann, wird dann sicher auch mal der eine oder andere Berufsblogger zur Suchmaschine oder Linkportal stilisiert werden.

Und wie bitte soll man denn sinnvoll auf Artikel verlinken, wenn man nicht die Überschrift oder eine andere kurze Wortgruppe dafür verwenden darf? “Bitte klicken Sie hier, da könnte etwas über XYZ stehen, was sie interessieren könnte, sofern heute noch der tt.mm.jjjj ist.” Klingt nach Blödsinn und praktisch nur schwer umsetzbar. Dürfen Links dann nur noch manuell gesetzt werden und der Bookmark zu einem Artikel bei irgendeiner Zeitungsseite von mir in meinem Feed wird kostenpflichtig, weil das ja schon Link-Aggregation ist und das evtl. themenrelevant auf meiner Businessseite auftaucht?

Da werden doch nicht nur für die Verleger, sondern auch für eine komplette neue Abmahnsparte Möglichkeiten zum Geldverdienen geschaffen, die alle Graubereiche des Gesetzen für sich nutzen werden. Jede dort fehlende Definition wird irgendjemanden zum Verhängnis. Schon allein deswegen sollte der Bundestag dieses Gesetzt nicht durchwinken. Dass dieses Gesetzt auch noch eine große Portion Innovation in Deutschland verhindern könnte, ist ein weiterer Grund.

Und wenn das sogar Mitglieder der Jungen Union begreifen, die ansonsten ja nicht unbedingt als sehr vorwärtsdenkend wahrgenommen werden, dann frage ich mich, auf was für ein Niveau man daraus für das Bundeskabinett schließen kann. Kein Rückgrat und deshalb vor den kommenden Wahlen vor Springer und Co kuschen?

Und mal nebenbei: in anderen Ländern wird beschlossen, dass die eigenen Bücher aus dem 20. Jahrhundert für die Bürger frei lesbar ins Netz gestellt werden. So sieht 3. Jahrtausend aus!
